Problem, constraints and approach
The ID.me Shop extension had a high number of bugs and a 3.4 store rating. Instead of patching bugs one by one, I changed how the code is built and checked. I proposed and led the move to TypeScript, then to React with a modular design, added Playwright end-to-end tests and made GitHub Actions audit, lint and build every pull request before it can merge. The rating rose to 4.2, the checks caught multiple critical vulnerabilities and the modular base made the later design overhaul easy to build.
What I built
- Proposed and led the migration to TypeScript, which cut bugs and lifted the store rating.
- Led the migration to React and a modular design, which made the later design overhaul easy to build.
- Proposed Playwright end-to-end tests, with a proof of concept, after noticing a high number of bugs.
- Pushed for GitHub Actions that audit, lint and build every PR before it can merge.
- Built a workflow that creates a build for each PR and posts it to the PR.
- Set up Prettier, ESLint and Husky rules and enforced them with GitHub Actions.
Results
- Store rating up from 3.4 to 4.2.
- The CI gates found multiple critical vulnerabilities.
